Recently, a person building a new house with a home cinema room asked us whether they should avoid having windows in the room. While most people’s home cinema rooms have windows by default, if you’re building a dedicated Home Cinema room, avoiding windows or minimalising the size of windows is preferable.
There are several reasons for this.
Firstly, you’ll enjoy better picture quality in a darker room, particularly during daytime viewing. If your cinema room does have windows, we recommend thick curtains with backing to help block out outside light.
Secondly, too much glass can affect your room’s acoustic qualities. So again, thick curtains will help minimise the negative acoustic characteristics of glass.
Another good option is to purchase a quality AV Receiver capable of running a diagnostic test of your cinema room’s acoustic qualities. Your AV Receiver will modify its sound output to offset any negative acoustic traits your room may have. This allows you to experience the best quality surround sound.
You may also want to check local building regulations concerning rooms without windows.
